Don Benbow, a 1995 inductee into the Butler Athletic Hall of Fame, serves as an associate athletic director at his alma mater. He oversees the department's financial aid and travel operations, in addition to directly supervising Butler's golf program. Benbow was an assistant football coach at Butler for 16 years. He joined Butler's athletic staff in 1969 as freshman football coach and varsity defensive coordinator, and remained on the staff until 1974, when he left to enter private business and coaching in the Chicago area. He returned to Butler's football staff in 1978. He also served several seasons as the school's golf coach after moving into his administrative position. Following his graduation in 1962, Benbow spent four years as a teacher and coach at Indianapolis Shortridge High School, directing the school's football teams to a 24-14-1 record and 1967 Indianapolis city championship. He further picked up professional coaching experience as an offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Capitals in 1970. As football team captain and one of the finest linemen ever to suit up for the Bulldogs, Benbow led the team to a three-year record of 26-1. He was the recipient of the Hilton Brown Award, was Butler's third Little All-American (1961), an All-Conference player and Indianapolis News MVP. He is a member of the Delaware County Hall of Fame and the Indiana Football Hall fo Fame. Benbow also holds a master's degree from Butler and held the rank of assistant professor in Butler's College of Education. He and his wife, Gerlinde, have two sons, Kip and Ben, and one daughter, Gina. |
